French Authorities Investigates Online Retail Giants Following Adult Toy Controversy

E-commerce platforms including these four major platforms are now under investigation in France for the allegation of enabling youngsters to access explicit information on their platforms, the French judicial authorities declared on Tuesday.

The nation's regulatory body had reported the retailers to the legal authorities on this past Sunday after raising worries about the sale of childlike intimate products on the Shein website over the weekend.

The French judicial officials noted that the websites are being examined over violent, pornographic or inappropriate messages that can be seen by minors.

AliExpress commented that it views the situation extremely earnestly. The other retailers have also been contacted for a statement.

Broader Probes and Platform Reactions

These platforms are also facing probes over the spread of content related to youngsters that are of a pornographic nature, the office mentioned.

The issues have been referred to the French minor protection office, the legal body noted. This office is an branch of the national police that manages the safeguarding of underage individuals.

The company asserted that the items in concern violated its policies and were taken down once it was informed of them.

"Sellers determined to violate or trying to circumvent these standards will be sanctioned in compliance with our rules," the platform said in a statement.

On Monday, the retailer confirmed it had prohibited the selling of all sex dolls on its marketplace worldwide. The based in Singapore retailer also said that it would ban indefinitely all seller accounts related to the illegal sale of the youth-resembling items and implement tighter controls on its platform.

Agency Assessment and Broader Scenario

The French consumer watchdog, the DGCCRF, had stated that the products' description and categorisation left "clear indication as to the child pornography essence" of the products.

The examination of the platform occurs while the company, which was established in China, makes arrangements for the opening on this Wednesday of its first fixed physical store in the French Republic.

Activists have been seen collected in front of the French capital retail outlet where Shein is scheduled to unveil the store.

Shein aims to launch stores in additional France's retail chains in urban centers including these regional hubs.
