Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Counters President Trump's Warning to Move World Cup Games from Boston

Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, indicated that the city was prepared for a face-off with President Donald Trump over his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to relocate World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located 22 miles south-west of the city.

Wu appeared on a Boston-based podcast recently to respond to criticism from the White House, which had described her as "radical left." President Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

She continued, "We live in a time where for drama, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and submit or follow along to a hateful agenda."

She also remarked, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." Wu concluded by stressing her support for the Boston, saying, "Ten toes down for Boston."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Involvement

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. Infantino has also been to the White House and given World Cup and club championship awards to Trump as gifts.

On Tuesday, President Trump was asked about recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police vehicle being burned. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's danger, I would call Gianni – the president of the organization, who's phenomenal."

He added, "I would say: 'We should relocate the games' and they would do that. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"

Previous Warnings and 2026 World Cup Information

Trump has previously suggested that he would take the similar discussion with the FIFA president about moving matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 locations across North America.

The US is joint hosts the 2026 World Cup with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is planned to be played from June 11 to July 19 next summer.
